Out Patient Department (OPD)
Out-patients are those who do not require admission to the hospital. The Department which cater to this category of patients is called Out-patient Department (OPD). Since it is the first area of the hospital, it reflects the image of the hospital. Good out-patient services constitute one of the most important elements of an ideal hospital. DECF is always concern about better out-patient service. Our OPD has proper ventilation, lighting, and sufficient space to accommodate patients and their attendees. The OPD provides diagnostic, curative, and preventive services to around five hundred patients a day. The patient registration counter registers the patient as an out-patient and our Ophthalmic assistant then guides them to the relevant departments for diagnosis and treatment procedures.
In-Patient Department (Ward)
A patient who is admitted to a hospital for treatment that requires at least one-night stay is called an in-patient. Area which cater to these patients are wards or in-patient department. Our In-patient department is located away from main roads and the OPD area which prevents cross-infection and it is easily approachable from the operation theatre and supportive services. In-patient department ensures comfortable stay of patients in 50 general beds for male, female and pediatric patients. All the wards have required staff, cleanliness, and support facilities to ensure patient satisfaction.
Subspecialty Services
Cataract
Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people, particularly in the aging population, and are the principal cause of curable blindness in the world. Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision through intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. In fact, it is the most frequently performed surgery in our hospital. The hospital performs around 7,000 cataract surgeries annually. Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) and Phacoemulsification both techniques that are done routinely here.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss. Neglected, this fell disease gradually devours your field of vision from the periphery and ultimately leads to complete blindness. That is why it is called the ‘silent killer of sight’ and is, at present, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma service at DECF is managed by trained & competent doctors. For better and efficient management, the hospital is equipped with all necessary equipments like Visual Field Analyser, Optical Coherence Tomography, Pachymeter, Laser, etc. The glaucoma department deals with around 600 OPD visits annually.
Orbit & Oculoplasty
The department of Orbit & Oculoplasty offers comprehensive treatment to various problems affecting the orbit of the eye. Orbit refers to the eye-socket (the cavity in the skull that holds the eye) and the surrounding structures. Diseases of the Orbit may arise from within the eye-socket or might be a secondary condition arising out of an existing illness. While some of these issues could be cosmetic, quite a few of orbital problems might affect the regular functioning of the eyes. There’s sure relief for these conditions and oculoplasty is a cosmetic/reconstructive surgical procedure that comes to the rescue of patients with eye orbit problems. Annually around 6000 patients are provided service through this department and around 2500 surgeries are performed.
Pediatric Ophthalmology
Pediatric ophthalmology is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that concentrates on treating the various eye problems affecting children. Pediatric Ophthalmology is taken quite seriously at DECF with expert consultants & surgeons working to make sure, the vision of our future generation is well protected. The department was inaugurated on 23 September 2013 with the support of Orbis International, Bangladesh and has facilities such as children’s play area, breastfeeding area, separate out-patient and in-patient department. The department is run by a team of trained and competent personnel such as pediatric ophthalmologists, medical officers, Anesthesiologist, Orthoptist, Refractionists, and Counselors. Service to more than 2500 patients is provided monthly at Pediatric Ophthalmology OPD and 350 surgeries are done annually.
Vitreo-Retina
The retina is a thin tissue layer located in the back of each of our eyes near the optic nerve. It is composed of alternating layers of cells in order to best interpret and direct the light coming in through our eyes. It’s an important part of our eye that assists in processing light and sending signals to our brain to help translate what we see. It is essential to our vision, and diseases and conditions affecting the retina can lead to permanent blindness. The Vitreo Retina department deals with patients having vitreo-retinal disorders that can be managed medically or by surgical intervention. The department is equipped with modern facilities like Fluorescein angiography, Optical Coherence Tomography, Color Fundus Photography and Laser services. The department also provides counseling to the patients.
Operation Theatre
The operation theatre is the heart of an eye hospital. A team of skilled surgeons, nurses, OAs and anesthesiologist operate on and care for patients in OT. DECF has OTS for doing septic and aseptic cases separately. These well-equipped independent operation theatres cater to around 60 surgeries a day. A Modular OT complex is now under construction which is planned to open in 2021.
